Noid - Noid (Russia - Karelia 2009) @320

Vepsian band "Noid" is a interesting group of young creative musicians from Petrozavodsk (Karelia, Russia), performing Vepsian songs in a world-music style.
First of all, they live in Karelia - one of Vepsians traditional residences and some of them has Vepsian roots moreover.
But the main idea is that it's very very very interesting to play such a music, 'cause it means also learning the customs and culture.
They call a style of their songs as world-music - it includes both traditional songs arranged in a modern style and authors' songs. Lyrics for the songs they write by themselves or use lyrics written by Vepsian poets.
Nevertheless in every song they use elements of traditional Vepsian musical culture.

Rum - Rum 1972-1978 (Belgium 2005) @320

Rum was founded by Paul Rans (vocals, guitar, lute, zither), Wiet Van de Leest (violin, tenor guitar, banjo and vocals) and Dirk Lambrechts (guitar).

After a year or two, Paul and Wiet sued the group for two before a trio again with Mr Van Dirk (vocals, oboe, guitar, mandolin), who performed in concerts by the end of the year 1975. During these years, have given many concerts - especially in Belgium (both in French than in Dutch), but also in France, Switzerland, Germany, Great Britain and Ireland - and recorded several albums in succession to his formula "fashion folk Flamengo. Rum sang and played a repertoire focused on traditional music Flamengo - including, for example, various parts of the repertoire musette, "a piece of Renaissance music, a piece of Italian origin, etc.. - Arranged in a contemporary and innovative at the same time. Featuring music, rum showed a bit of humor. For a time, Wiet Van de Leest also played the harmonium in concert, then presented Paul Rans Wiet saying he had taken his father grinder to be!

Around 1977 or 1978, Rum reformed without Paul Rans, but with Juan Masondo (guitar, flute and vocals) and Vera Coomans (vocals). Later, Wiet Van de Leest and Vera Coomans Rum left to found the group Madou. Since 1979, Dirk and Juan reformed a new rum that has not happened

for several years with frakk Arn (acoustic bass, trombone and tuba) and Jean-Pierre Van Hees (bagpipe and flute), Juan Masondo add bouzouki and requinto his first instrument, guitar. Then the group recorded two 33 rpm "Gelukkig ma non troppo" and "Tropical Flandria. The latest, released in 1982, is considered the first album of mestizo folk: traditional music is really diverse influences morning (Balkan music, musette, tango , etc.). Rum continued to give concerts in this formation until 1986, when the group disbanded.

We talk often, even today, the "Rum legendary group" that could be compared (at least in Belgium), in terms of popularity and its contribution to the movement of "popular" in the famous Bothy Band "Irish.

In 2005, the three founding members of the Rum gathered for a tour with the singers of Lai and some other projects. But Mr Van Dirk is, unfortunately, died May 23, 2007. His friends then gave concerts in his honor, the rooms were crowded again proved the popularity of Dirk and Rum.

Chimera - Des Duivels Oorkussen (Netherlands 1980) @320

The core of the band was made up in 1974 of spouses Marry and Bas Verkade who had been active as a folk duo in the Rotterdam area. They were joined by Koos Leezer (keys/guitar/vocals), Ruud Schotting (bass), Kees Mook (violin) and Hans de Lange (drums/percussion). Their first album Des Duivels Oorkussen (1980) was a rock solid start, but they will be chiefly remembered for the follow-up also released by Stoof: Obstakel (1981). This is one of Nederfolks enduring masterpieces. Unfortunately the band folded soon afterwards. Chimera records are perhaps unique in that they pull a full electric folkrock style into a context of purely Dutch traditional music. In the mid eighties and nineties Chimera tried to make a restart with their own compositions but unfortunately, through circumstances they had to stop again. In september 2007 Chimera got back on stage with a new repertoire.

Folque - Kjempene på Dovrefjell (Norway 1975) @320

Folque's second album is the logical follow-up to their debut but it seems that this would be a concept album. I use the word "seems" because I do not speak or read Norwegian, therefore I am unable to grasp much except judge on the musical qualities of such an album.

And that music is actually still quite folk as in pure folk with rock beats at times, and the longer tracks hold enough interplay to be at least entertaining to most progheads, but I did not find this album very progressive (at least compared to Comus , Algarnas Tradgard , Spirogyra). This seven piece combo seems to take the early Steeleye Span attitude (mainly traditional folk than give it a rock beat) but sometimes reaching out to Fairport Convention (circa Liege and Lief era) and also a bit of mostly-Scottish Incredible String Band.

As interesting the comparison I just made above , most proghead should approach Folque with much caution because this group is rather borderline for the scope of the ProgArchives. However , should you want to investigate this , You might want to start with this album or its follow-up Vardoger

Folque - Vardoger (Norway 1977) @320

Folque are a band that will appeal to fans of traditional-leaning Nordic folk like Gjallarhorn, Kebnekaise and Garmarna. They tend to be mellower than most of Garmarna’s music, and Lisa Helljesen’s vocals are solid but not in the same league as Gjallarhorn’s Jenny Wilhelms.
Like all those bands Folque form their music around traditional Nordic folk (hence the name) but add modern instrumentation such as electric guitar, drums and synthesizers. Of course the instruments that make this folk dominate though, and especially violin, mandolin and dulcimer. At least two band members play banjos, but really the violin tends to overpower all the other stringed instruments on the first half of the album, while on the second half most tracks emphasize the banjos.

Several songs including “Æ'kje Gutane”, “Felerier”, “Dansevise” and “Gjevrevalsen” are simply traditional folk arrangements with really no progressive tendencies whatsoever. On that note the band should probably be considered more of a plain folk band than a contemporary one, but occasionally they stray into this century with some guitar and drums garnishments to liven things up (“Varulv”, “Beiarblakkjen”). These are the exceptions though, and the norm really is a traditional folk album with just enough of the twentieth century in it to earn them a place in the world music rack at your more discerning neighborhood book stores.

I can’t say this album does much for me personally, but it’s decent enough for what it is. I don’t expect most progressive folk fans will find the sounds here too appealing, but if you happen to run across a copy it might make for appropriate background music while reading a dusty old book about European history, or possibly for the drinking hour at a family reunion if Nordic bloodlines run in your family.
Otherwise I can’t say the album rates much more than a fan’s choice, so two stars it is and on to the next one in the stack.

Steeleye Span - Cogs, Wheels And Lovers (England 2009) @320

In a world where bands come and go in the blink of an eye, the enduring success of Steeleye Span is one of the great stories in rock music.
2009 has seen them celebrate an incredible forty years together by heading out to play live, first in the USA and then Australia before returning to the UK for an extensive tour will take them up to Christmas and include a special show at the Barbican with guests John Kirkpatrick and Martin Carthy.

Quite simply, the band has seldom been more active in its long career and the current line-up of Maddy Prior, Peter Knight, Rick Kemp, Liam Genockey and Ken Nicol has in fact become the longest serving of any across the years. At a point when most bands are happy to settle down to rehashing past glories, Steeleye Span have pushed on with a succession of acclaimed albums, each seeing them re-define their classic sound.

2009 is no exception, with the release of their 21st studio album, Cogs, Wheels & Lovers, is a record that will typically see them buck their own trend and go back to their roots; the interpretation of traditional song. This though, has always been the Steeleye way. Tied not to the past, the present or the future – simply timeless.
