Hot Griselda - Hot Griselda [Belgium 2009] @320

Trying to escape Irish traditional music uilleann piper Stijn van Beek ended up at a folkbal in Nijmegen, looking for some shelter for the autumn cold of 2007. But apparently there was no escape. Before he even managed to enter the dancefloor the haunting sound of the Irish pipes surrounded him once again, this time played by multi-instrumentalist Toon van Mierlo. As a result of this most remarkable meeting Toon and Stijn decided to start playing together with two renowned string-prodigies: Kaspar Laval and Jeroen Geerinck. Hot Griselda was born. And She was hotter than hot, bigger than huge and at times quite sensitive... Hot Griselda hit the folkscene by surprise and hit it hard. After Her first appearance at Boombalfestival summer 2008 a stormy year followed during which She conquered the hearts and minds of the folkies throughout Belgium, Holland and even Portugal. Within a year Her first album was out, containing thirteen steamy tracks of folk with echoes from Ireland, Flanders, Brittany and even heavy metal. Recently Hot Griselda spread her wings to France and Germany, in the meantime working on brand new refreshing material!

Zlabya - La Méduse-Boîte [Belgium 2010] @320

Born in 2007, Zlabya dedicates itself to folk music for dancers...
It owes its unusual style to the work of its composers: Raphael Decoster and Olivier Catteau...
With a repertoire influenced by Klezmer, Irish and Tzigane music, Zlabya contributes to the tradition while innovating, to the dancers' greatest pleasure...

In 2008, Florian Huygebaert (percussion instruments) joins the band...
In 2009, after two years spent on various stages of France and Belgium (mainly around the Franco-Flemish area, but also in festivals such as Damada, Genntines, the Boombal festival, Andaças and Roubaix l'accordéon), Fanny Bizien and Olivier Catteau leave the band. They are succeeded by J-B Guerrier (double bass) and Theo Kaiser (trumpet and DADGAD guitar)...

Keeping the dancers' well-being as sole purpose and driving force of its creation, the band turns towards a jazz-inspired aesthetic, preserving space for improvisation within its compositions and arragements.

Peut-être Demain - Gelieve de Dieren te Voederen [Belgium 2010] @320

Peut-être Demain is a group of 6 good friends who share the same passion: music! They met each other at the folk training camp which takes place every summer in Gooik, Belgium. It was there that, after several years, they decided to start a band of their own. They created their own dance folk-rock music and made their first appearance on-stage at the festival “Gooikoorts” in 2007. Linde Carrijn (violin), Lisa Jordens (violin and vocals), Michael Verlinden (Electric Piano), Gielis Cautaers (drums and percussion) and Wouter Devriese (electric and acoustic guitar) instantly captured the hearts of the audience... One month later they all but won the ball-contest of “Boombal”. Their second place did not stop them. From then on they moved forward at high-speed: the ball of Epiphany in Gooik, the carnival ball in Kortrijk and a performance at the “’t Ey” in St.Niklaas. Also on their record of achievements are the Paulus-celebrations, the Scottish weekend, the “speculaas-festival” and a first international performance at the Fers Folk Festival in the Netherlands. Next to these, they regularly perform at ‘boombals’ throughout Flanders. Wherever they appear, their enthusiasm is contagious. Their latest acquisition is Joren Cautaers who takes care of the bass guitar... Peut-être Demain plays folk-rock dance music which they created themselves. Their music is aimed at all ages: young and old, families with children,.... Their performances are regularly preceded by a dance initiation. Thus, many people are encouraged to take part in the dance and get involved in the music. E.g. in March 2008, a dance initiation was given by Peut-être Demain to the children of the primary school of Galmaarden, during school hours. The following weekend, the school had a folkball with Peut-être Demain which was again preceded by a dance initiation, not only for the children but for all those present, young and old... In a recording studio Peut-être Demain recorded the song “Julie” for the Boombal-cd, volume 2. They appear next to major names of the folk world: Kadril, Laïs, Urban Trad, Ishtar, Yann Tiersen, Ambrozijn,.... This cd was released in September 2008... The year 2009 took an excellent start for Peut-être Demain. Besides overcrowded halls such as the “Entrepot” (Bruges) and “De Centrale” (Ghent), they were praised as the best belgian ball group in the annual poll of the well-known folk site “Folkroddels”. On top of it all, folkies voted Peut-être Demain to a second place in the category ‘groups which will break through in 2009’. The summer of 2009 was very busy for them. They played at well-known folkfestivals such as Na Fir Bolg, Folk 'n Ro, Boombalfestival and a Celtic Folkfestival in the Netherlands. They also participated in the contest of "Het Lindeboom-Festival" in France where they became "Le Dauphin 2009" and took the mainprice, which was: a CD-recording. The main act at this festival was the famous Corsican group: I Muvrini. In October they were selected to represent Belgium at the Nanning International Folk Song Arts Festival in China. One of the biggest festivals of South-China and even there the enthusiasm was amazing. In 2011, the band was invited to play a gig at the big Körro Folkmusic Festival in Sweden.
Discography: Peut-être Demain recorded the song "Julie" in a studio for the Boombal-cd, volume II. On that cd, they appear next to major names of the folk world: Kadril, Laïs, Urban Trad, Ishtar, Yann Tiersen, Ambrozijn,.... This cd was released in September 2008. In 2009 they were elected 'Le Dauphin 2009' at the 'Het Lindeboom Festival' in France. This means they caught the main prize, the opportunity to record their first full cd in the Wildboar studio of Erwin Libbrecht. This cd has been available since July 2010 and is the indisputable proof that this young band can, besides having wild parties, make exceptionally good music. Absolutely worthwhile!!

I Fratelli Tarzanelli - Palomino [Belgium 2011] @320

I Fratelli Tarzanelli is a folk group dance music. For information "Tarzanelli" is a naughty word in Italian dialect. You guessed it, the duo humor content is relatively high, and musically they meet and complement perfectly. The band plays dance music, but the sound that emerges is not necessarily that the typical repertoire of classical and traditional dance.

Phønix - Pigen Og Drengen [Denmark 2002]

"The Girl and the Boy" is Phønix's fourth but it is the first release from the band to contain both vocal and instrumental music. The numbers on the album are a mixture of newly composed tunes and texts taken from the treasure trove of Scandinavian folk poetry and song. The texts add a whole new dimension to the unique Phønix style and sound, of original and complicated arrangements. The melodies and words weave elegantly around one another and create a living and intense whole.
The title number "The Girl and the Boy" is a story about a young couple that meet on the dance floor, and is in a way a microcosm of all the album's songs. They all contain a meeting for better or for worse, between two opposing forces; order and chaos, justice and repression, life and death, stupidity and intelligence, beauty and ugliness or male and female.
With this album Phønix is yet again pushing back the boundaries of the Danish music tradition, taking a number of relevant, human songs, and bringing them into the new millennium in new clothes.

Wipidoup - Kailh a gorrion [France/Bretagne 2012] @320

“In its new opus, Wipidoup is devoted explicitly to the transmission. From the first call to the dance to the final call to sleep, children both young and old are taken by the hand to discover the melodious richness of musical instruments and the poetic delirium of the impassioned Breton voice.”
Kailh a gorrion, the eagerly anticipated third release from the dark, jazzy Fest Noz group Wipidoup (which means double poison in Breton) has finally come out from Bemol Productions. Wipidoup’s lineup retains the hugely talented chromatic accordionist Regis Huiban (Kof ha Kof, Tan Ba’n Ti, Skolvan), upright bassist Pierrick Tardivel (Darhaou, Dibenn, Bill Ebet, Kej), vocalist and woodwind player Gildas La Buhe (Termajik, Bill Ebet) and adds guitarist Philippe Gloaguen (Kej, Tan Ba’n Ti, Regis Huiban Quartet ). Kailh a gorrion demonstrates a further refinement and evolution of their signature sound. Kailh a gorrion is a richly imagined storybook; quite literally in the gorgeous and extensive book contained in the CD, and in the cycle of tunes and musical stories that make up the CD. While definitely not a straightforward work of dance music as were their previous efforts, it is wildly imaginative, gorgeous, complex, and dare I say, magical. La Buhe’s spoken word pieces, previously confined to brief opening statements, have here expanded to full tales or ‘contes’ with musical accompaniment and are powerfully evocative.
Wipidoup takes to a pleasant extreme a quality present in much good Breton music – dark, sinuous minor key melodies and a tonally and harmonically rich, trancelike presentation – an aesthetic made even more explicit with the use of suggestive titles such as L’Opium du danseur and so forth. Kailh a gorrion is no different. Huiban and Tardivel continue to exhibit the jazz-inflected, rhythmic and harmonic perfection that is the foundation of this band’s sound. The addition of Gloaguen, who has already played with these two in earlier groups, adds a significant amount of depth and interest. Having only one mouth, obviously Gildas La Buhe can only either sing or play the saxophone at any given moment. In previous Wipidoup recordings, his gravelly vocals, while moody and powerful, were not always quite compelling enough to compensate for the decreased instrumentation in the mix while he sang – something more was needed to flesh out the band’s sound. Gloaguen’s guitar is that something more. As a quartet, the increased level of instrumental depth behind La Buhe’s vocals elevates the group’s efforts from good to great. Yes, this is a great recording; classy, seductive, beautifully arranged, subtly produced and with charming and clever storybook graphics continuing the all-too-appropriate theme of puppets who are slaves to the dance.
