Värttinä - Viena (2015 Finland) @VBR

Värttinä is the crown jewel of Finnish folk/world music with a history already more than 30 years old (the group began as a children’s project in the village of Rääkkylä in 1983). Their international breakthrough followed the release of album Oi Dai in 1991. In an illustrious musical career, Värttinä has recorded for such labels as Nonesuch, Realworld, Rockadillo and Westpark Music, and collaborated with A. R. Rahman in composing the music for the theatrical adaptation of The Lord of the Rings, which played in Toronto in 2006 and London in 2007.

Värttinä’s trademark has always been razor-sharp harmonies sung by powerful leading ladies, currently the founding member Mari Kaasinen with Susan Aho and Karoliina Kantelinen. Viena is Värttinä’s thirteenth studio album and its music was inspired by the trip the group made to the Viena Karelian folklore villages in Russia, where they had unique encounters with the last surviving "rune singers" in the region. These singers are the last living connection to an ancient culture that is thousands of years old, and out of which Kalevala folk poetry tradition was born. During their journey, Värttinä enjoyed remarkable nature experiences, which have also inspired the album (as the natural world informs so much of their repertoire). The Viena album is a tribute to Värttinä’s Viena Karelian musical roots.

Treacherous Orchestra - Grind (Scotland 2015) @320

The Treacherous Orchestra story is one of many strands, a tale told spanning the length and breadth of Scotland.  An un-definable collective force fusing people, concepts, styles and influences, shaping a musical supergroup that defies description.  From the North to the South, East to the West they came, converging in the musical melting-pot of Glasgow, trading ideas over beers and playing music with ferocity, verve and passion.  This is a tale of musical origins…

Wolfstone - Seven (1999 Scotland) @320

Seven is the fifth album by the Scottish Celtic rock band Wolfstone. It was released in 1999 after a short hiatus, down to poor management by Green Linnet Records. The album, a comeback, was considered a success by the band. After its release, Wolfstone recorded a live album, Not Enough Shouting. It sees long-term member Stuart Eaglesham take over lead vocals, following the departure of Ivan Drever.

Despite being the fifth studio album, the title Seven is chosen due to the sequence including Pick of the Litter and This Strange Place. It is unlikely that the chosen sequence was the one not including Pick of the Litter or This Strange Place, but rather including Wolfstone and Wolfstone II, the band's first two albums they've since disowned and stated that despite sharing the band name of Wolfstone, those two albums were by a different band.

Hohka - Puutarhautuminen (Finland 2011) @320

The folk music ensemble Hohka have been active since 2006. During their career Hohka have performed at widely different locations from intimate clubs to festival arenas, from concert halls to trams. The band’s trademark are its live performances, which are full of warmth, joy and humour. In November 2011, Hohka won the Nordic Championship in Folk Music in the folk group category.
Their debut album Puutarhautuminen, released in December 2011, had a warm reception. Over their many years of making music together, the band members’ playing has fused into a unified sound. In addition to catchy melodies and a solid knowledge of tradition, Hohka’s music is full of the spontaneous joy of creation and sheer enjoyment in playing music.
From July 2015 Hohka has been a quintet, adding percussion to the band's sound. New album mailla/halmeilla was released in May 2015, where you can hear the new fresh tunes with new hypnotic and rootsy touch.

Wolfstone - This Strange Place (1998 Scotland) @320

With two years and thousands of miles of road work behind them, Wolfstone returns with another studio album. Co-produced by lead singer and guitarist Ivan Drever and bassist/percussionist Wayne Mackenzie, This Strange Place represents a departure from previous Wolfstone recordings. Perhaps their most introspective work to date, the album was written and recorded entirely in Inverness, Scotland, home to this prolific Celtic group.

Of the five songs and five instrumental sets included, eight were penned by, or co-written with, Ivan Drever. Whether reflecting on a lost love of the Scottish landscape he is so inspired by, Drever joins the forefront of today's contemporary Celtic songwriters.

Other highlights include piper Stevie Saint's eponymous set, complete with marching snare, and Duncan Chisholm's beautiful fiddle work on Ivan's Banks of the Ness. It would be hard to imagine a more fitting tribute to Wolfstone's Highland home.

Ulrika Bodén - Vålje Å Vraka [2001 Sweden] @320

After a string of albums singing with bands - Kalabra, Sälta, Ranarim, Rosenbergs Sjua - for her first solo project Ulrika Bodén has turned to the traditional music of Ångermanland, the region of her home village of Helgum in eastern central Sweden.

Her singing has always had a natural, direct freshness, and with this album it seems to have gained a new confidence and command. In some songs she’s unaccompanied; in most she’s eloquently accompanied by Ranarim colleagues Niklas Roswall (nyckelharpas, chord zither) and Jens Engelbrecht (guitar, mandola, kantele) joined by Hedningarna’s Anders Norudde on stråkharpa, moraharpa, fiddle, whistle or Swedish bagpipe. Subtly crafty in arrangement, drawing out and pointing up the spirit of the material, the sound is very complete, needing no bass lines nor percussion. Together they lift into fresh new life material, rarely if ever heard from other contemporary performers, learnt from old radio recordings, transcriptions and from visits to some of the surviving old singers including Ester Isaksson from Helgum, a snatch of whose singing of the title song opens a very attractive album. The title means “picking and choosing” and she has obviously done just that; there’s nothing superfluous here.
