Nicolas Quemener , born in August 1964 in Beaufort-en-Vallée ( Maine-et-Loire ), is a French musician, recognized guitarist in Celtic music , playing in open agreement . Between the ages of 13 and 16, he studied percussion at the National Music Conservatory of Angers for four years. He listens to Bothy Band and meets Breton and Irish musicians when he visits the Korn-Er-Pont tavern in Guern, which makes him want to play. At the age of 18, a friend offers him a guitar.

Guitarist, flutist and Breton singer, he lived from 1989 to 1992 in Ireland, which enabled him to enrich his musical culture. Trio Loubelya - Sogni d'oro (France 2013) @320

(Neo -) trad-jazz-music-of-the-world. This would be a proposal if one were to classify the music of this trio.

Fit labels, neologisms barbarians, who tend to compartmentalize the music, the trio Loubelya, him, took the party to live it fully.
This album is like them: both intimate and eloquent, virtuosic and popular. Moving. Just as the complicity that is created between its members, balls in balls on the roads of Europe. Mazurkas, packed, or circles circassians are outlined, with the background, the bucolic charm of the parks of Lisbon, the landscapes of the South of Italy , the magic of Venice ,the strength of the volcanoes of the Azores or the heat of the coffee shops of Arnaud Bernard in Toulouse.
The breath fumed out of the accordion comes shelter a playground where clarinet and saxophone, sometimes subtle, sometimes playful, defying the round depth of the bass.

Three strong personalities, for sure, Mary Constant, Florent Lalet and Rolland Martinez, who here are based up to form a fourth: the Trio Loubelya.
Loubelya, it means living.

The trio Loubelya it is a harmonious cocktail of original compositions, a touch of emotion, a zest of humour, and a nice complicity for a ball "trad'current" forceful and intimate, combining with finesse the subtle breath of the accordion, the timbre intoxicating, the saxophone, the clarinet delusional and the deep, immersive bass.

Bifólc - Bal Fólc (Italy 2012) @320

A pair of musicians attracted by traditional popular culture and by a glass or two of good red wine, all the better if in an old fashioned pub around a table with good friends, playing music and telling tales...
In december 2006 Stefano Guagnini and Gianluca Cavallotto become Bifòlc.
Their repertoire? A beautiful mixture of music and songs that invite dancing and listening alike. These are from regions such as Piedmont, the Occitan regions of both France and Italy( Italian Occitan valleys, Quercy, Auvergne, Gascoigne) and all the way to Poitou, Vandée and Brittany.
In other words, all the necessary ingredients for a “bal fòlc”, a street party or more simply

    ...a cellar drinking session !

Steeleye Span - Wintersmith Deluxe Edition 2 CDs (England 2013-2014) @320

Steeleye Span’s latest offering is a collaboration with none other than Terry Pratchett, best known for his the Discworld series of novels. Terry is a self-declared Spanner and has been since his adolescence: “my mate Dave put me between two huge speakers and turned everything up to eleven. He played Boys of Bedlam until the chimney wobbled”. He’s been hooked ever since. Steeleye Span also played at Terry’s sixtieth birthday, it was after hearing that Maddy was a fan of his work that he proposed a collaboration to weave in some words of his own into their songs. The result is Wintersmith an album that is already topping the Amazon English folk album charts!

Wintersmith is a concept album based on Pratchett’s Tiffany Aching series so those of you that have read the novels will be familiar with the 13 years old Tiffany who in Wintersmith joins in the secret dark morris, the morris dance performed wearing black clothes and octiron bells that welcomes in the winter. She ends up coming face to face with the very face of winter himself. You can’t miss the cover which features Dark Morris on a backdrop of winter woods, the perfect eye-catching image for the tales of ancient rituals and secret folk dances that lie within.

Although the album can still be enjoyed without having read the novels, those that have will form an instant association with the songs. This comes as a bonus as you’ll understand the significance of songs through characters such as The Summer Lady with whom Tiffany shares some powers.

This is folk rock and in places, especially in the opening it is with a capital ‘R’. A quick grab for the sleeve notes reveals that production was handed to Chris Tsangarides who has names such as Thin Lizzy, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath and Gary Moore under his belt…well, if you’re going to rock you may as well do it right.

Before you run for the hills there are folkier offerings such as ‘You‘ which features the Northumbrian Pipes of guest musician Kathryn Tickell. Band of Teachers also hikes up the folk offering still more with the help of Maddy’s fine vocals, lovely harmonies, a catchy rhythm and Peter Knight’s fine dancing fiddle solo. Besides Kathryn other guests feature including John Spiers on Melodeon and of course Terry Pratchett on vocals whose spoken words on ‘The Good Witch‘ will bring a smile to the face of many Pratchett fans as he talks of the loneliness and hard work involved in being a witch.

The album, despite the dark elements also has lighter moments which will be more obvious to those that know the characters such as the Nac Mac Feegle who are best described as Glaswegian fairy folk who like to drink and fight.

As a concept album it has that feel of being made for a stage production and I’m not suggesting it will become one but with sixteen tracks on offer it must have crossed peoples minds! Spanners will be pleased with the album and Pratchett fans will also be heading for it in droves. There will no doubt be some crossover along the way with CDs and novels exchanging hands…a perfectly matched offering!

Spontus - Spontus (2010 France) @320

This 4th album extends the approach undertaken in the previous one: music to listen to while dancing, or music to dance that is listening! A music that often flies to new sounds but always lands in a fest-noz when the violin and the kan and diskan guitar, or the accordion and the double bass play with the bombard and the biniou. In this disc, Spontus reveals a very personal universe, a universe impregnated by the quest for style, with very pronounced references, a universe also born of a complicity created by these years of common life ...

Spontus - An Huneour (2014 France) @320

"Spontus has made people dance in all corners of Brittany since 1996. The band plays a renewed traditional dance music. A boundless creativity witch strengthens the link between musicians and dancers. The band offers a large repertoire of dances from western and eastern Brittany, constantly refering to a common set of dances. The musicians draw their music out of the 4 albums they have realesed to make people dance. They keep a fair share of improvisation and interaction with dancers when it comes to the choice of repertoire."

Tapage - Partage Nocturne (2000 France) @192

Bourbonno-European trip for a trio of finesse 'Carried away by the whirlwind of a polka or lulled by a lament, trained by the jerky rhythm of a bourrée or bewitched by a Gaelic chant, the genres succeed each other with the same dexterity. A hurdy-gurdy, a diatonic and a bagpipes, it takes no more to give superb colors to traditional melodies, drawn from imaginary sources to compose others all equally remarkable, exploring the musical richness of elsewhere.

Okra Playground - Turmio (Finland 2016) @320

Helsinki based electro-folk band Okra Playground was originally formed in 2010
from a shared wish to bring together excellent people and musician to play around traditional Finnish music with a fresh approach. The band became almost literally a musical playground for its musicians. On this playground the kantele and bowed lyre, both ancient folk instruments, coexist in a new, exciting symbiosis with modern instruments and soundscapes. The music resulting from the quite unusual interesting combination has roots deep in the Finnish soil, but its tallest branches spread out towards the furthest shores of world music. The strong voices of the three female singers, as well as the age-old lyrics, simultaneously take the listener to far-off places and close to home. Okra Playground’s fresh music captivates the listener with its hypnotic beat and mystical energy.

“This is one of the most exciting bands to come out of Finland in recent times.” (Songlines Magazine UK 122/2016)

Päre - Hausjärvi beat (2016 Finland) @320

There used to be such a thing as Finnish bagpipes, but the instrument sank into obscurity for 200 years until Petri Prauda (also known as a player of stringed instruments in Frigg, Hyperborea, etc.) had the notion of re-creating it with instrument builder Yrjänä Ermala. Accordingly, Hausjärvi beat marks the recording debut not only of the band named Päre but also of the Finnish bagpipes – and a groovy debut it is, too.

This is a disc of delightfully pompous acoustic stadium folk that without any doubt will have people dancing. Described as all-natural ethno-disco, the repertoire consists of repetitive kantele and jouhikko tunes and fiddle melodies from both Finnish-speaking and Swedish-speaking regions of Finland.

Everything is bound together by the band’s watertight ensemble work and particularly the rich sound world of the rarer instruments: not only Prauda on the bagpipes but also Tapani Varis on the jaw harps, folk clarinet (liru) and overtone flute, Piia Kleemola on the violin and octave violin, Jarmo Romppanen on the ten-string mandola. Everything floats over the percussion kit intricately managed by Oskari Lehtonen.

Hausjärvi beat by Päre was worth waiting for – after two centuries the bagpipes ride again!

Riobó - Riobó (2011 Spain / Galicia) @VBR~200

Begoña Riobó is currently one of the most renowned violinists in Galician music. She has an outstanding musical career, has played with Carlos Núñez, Anxo Lorenzo, Susana Seivane, and Sondeseu, amongst others, and is now the first Galician Folk violinist to lead her own band.
"Riobó" is the name of Begoña's group and also the title of the first album, characterised by the virtuosity of the musicians when arranging and interpreting traditional Galician melodies, being faithful to their origins. Thus, each concert is a journey of sensations during which both the deep cultural roots and present day performance formulas live side by side.
Accompanying Begoña in 'Riobó', we have four renowned musicians that garner a solid professional career and participate regularly in the main musical projects in Galicia. They are Fernando Barroso (guitar), Marcos Campos (Gaita, accordion and whistles), Xosé Liz (Bouzouki), and Fernando Pérez (flute and requinta).

Waxies Dargle - 1993 - World Tour Of Ireland

Waxies Dargle are one of the many traditional Celtic folk bands to come up through London's Irish pub circuit. The band, founded by Dubliner Gerry Heaney, derived its name from a popular Irish drinking song about a fair called "the Waxies Dargle" which was held by tailors from the coastal town of Bray early in the 20th century. Soon after the band's emergence on the London scene, they attracted a strong following with their lively blend of familiar Irish standards, original compositions, contemporary folk covers, and traditional North American folk tunes.

Figgy Duff - A Retrospective 1974-1993 (1995 Canada) @192

Figgy Duff was a Canadian folk-rock band from Newfoundland. They played a major role in the Newfoundland cultural renaissance of the 1970s and 80s. Formed in 1976 by Noel Dinn who named the band after a kind of traditional pudding Figgy Duff travelled across Newfoundland learning traditional songs. They performed with some distinct elements of rock and roll. They began working with Island Records early though the album that resulted has yet to be released. Instead they released their independent self-titled debut album Figgy Duff in 1980. The album was also released by Ottawa-based Posterity Records. It was followed by After the Tempest in 1982. Throughout the next thirteen years Figgy Duff continued touring and released three more albums Weather Out the Storm (1989) Downstream (1993) and the compilation Retrospective (1995).
The line-up changed several times but the core of Noel Dinn and Pamela Morgan singer-songwriter stayed the same. Weather Out the Storm was nominated for a 1991 Juno Award. Dinn died of cancer in 1993 and Morgan disbanded Figgy Duff soon after. The band has since reunited twice once in 1999 for a silver anniversary tour and again in summer 2008 to celebrate the release of a cd of live recordings from the bands previous reunion.
